First of all I'm not entirely sure I've ever reached a truly meditative state in my life, no matter the situation. When I was doing martial arts as a teenager it was encouraged and even part of the class, but that was years ago. I believe the closest I've ever come to it was during a yoga class I took last year. Many of you are advocates of it, and Wayland speaks of it in his books. I'm looking for advice that any of you would have, I want to be able to control myself more, that includes my hyper vigilance (due to experiences work and military related). Willing to give anything a try. Thank you.

Hey Dthewalker, Maybe this link: www.shadowdance.org/toteg/trance.htmlcan help you, it's the one I use. I'm still at the first 3 parts, wich include relaxing, creating heaviness, and then warmth in the body. Progress is slow but steady with me, maybe it can help you to.

I've finally had some success with going into some trances during meditation. If you're really relaxed and your mind is free, you'll kind of feel like you're in that state between awake and asleep, and random things that might even seem nonsensical will float into your mind. That's a good state to be in when you want to be receptive to messages from spirits, deities and your higher self.
I'm still not good at the kind where my brain seems completely blank.

Sometimes meditating in a laying down position helps. Ideally, one could meditation in any position but as someone new to this, sitting down positions can get uncomfortable and if my posture isn't perfect then it's harder to breathe deeply.that makes it hard to relax. Sometimes music helps or some repetitive noise. Watching something mesmerizing like a candle may help.

I had similar difficulties and still do at some points, but my best advice is do not get frustrated when your conscious mind keeps throwing things to distract you. Think of it as something that is usually in control does not really know how to react when that control is taken away, so becoming frustrated or impatient will only reduce your concentration. Just imagine your non-gangr self being removed from your mind, if that makes any sense. Once I learned this tactic it allowed me to melt every thing else away pretty much immediately, and it was one of the strongest meditation/trances ive ever had. I hope this helps.
